Personally, I’ve been editing my videos on a PC for a long time. So on this point I would say that it also depends on your budget. A Mac costs about twice as much as a Windows PC for an equivalent hardware configuration. But also and above all for a completely different software/hardware optimization. Since the release of the M1/M2/M3 chips I’ve been more interested in Macintosh computers . Indeed, this chip, with software optimized for it, offers a power/energy/heating ratio never seen before.
You only have to watch the tests on YouTube to realize it. Apple has released something heavy with this chip, very heavy even. For example, I saw on YouTube the entry-level Mac mini M1 (800€) handle 8K from a RED camera without flinching and heating up a bit more than when it is not in use. So I’ll let you imagine how easy it is with the M2, M3 chips or the latest M4 and M4 Pro .
Mac solutions
To change ecosystems, try something else, more stable, quieter and with fewer bugs. And also because Apple’s machines, whether the new iMacs, the new Mac Minis or the MacBook Air or Pro, have dropped in price. Much more so than they were when they were equipped with Intel processors.
So yes, Apple offers closed machines, in which you can’t change or add anything inside. This is a big obstacle if you want to upgrade your machine yourself. No extra RAM, no bigger internal hard drive… Everything is soldered to the motherboard, you can’t change anything.
Mac optimization
But it’s precisely this hardware closure that allows Apple to optimize each component of its machines. This is why if you want to add a hard drive, you’ll have to add an external SSD via USB-C on one of the too few connections available on iMacs or MacBooks.
But behind these drawbacks there is a stable, reliable, fast system, which does not heat up, silent , which consumes very little energy and optimized to the smallest onions. Especially for video editing, MAO ( Computer-Assisted Music ) or photo processing with powerful software like Luminar Neo , Lightroom or DxO PhotoLab . So when I see Mac users who update their machine after 6 years minimum and who do not want to leave this brand, it makes me want to bite into the Apple with the Mac Mini. Especially when I hear that Adobe Premiere Pro or Davinci Resolve 20 are optimized for these chips. 2 software that I now use regularly.
So if you too want to bite into the Apple, here are the M1, M2, M3 (new iMac) models that I have chosen which will be suitable for 4K editing and much more. The models with 16GB of RAM will age better. You should know that the M1 models are sufficient for Full HD and 4K editing without any problem. The advantage of taking a more recent model is to go faster. Faster rendering of effects, faster export, etc.
The latest models equipped with the M4 or M4 Pro chip now offer a minimum of 16GB of RAM. Apple is increasingly trying to attract PC users with the Mac Mini. Their latest model equipped with the M4 chip costs only €699. A Mac at this price, which doesn’t take up space, doesn’t make noise, allows you to edit 4K and 8K videos without any problems, and will age well, is something to think about!
